So, some of you know I have traveled to 68 countries for work and play. And many people over the years have asked me how that happened.
Long story short, it was a miracle.
But, I guess you could say I caused it.
Here’s how…
- I set an intention.I had a dream coming out of college that I could travel the world as a journalist meeting amazing people, learning and absorbing all the knowledge I possibly could. And I was willing to wait for that opportunity. While I had NEVER heard of a company that would take a recent college grad to do such a lofty job, I saw others doing this and I knew in my heart of hearts I could, too. I held that believe and then…
- I boldly said NO to another offer that I knew would not fulfill me.I got an incredible job offer that would take me to New York to work for News Corp. BUT, it was a desk job in Manhattan and I knew it would not fulfill me. Even though I had minimal work experience, I had the ______ (ahh the power of youth) to turn it down and hold out for something aligned with my heart. *** Side note… this is blank because I actually don’t know FOR SURE what it was. However, many possibilities often with negative associations, come to mind, “guts, balls, sense of entitlement, arrogance, stupidity.” BUT the other possibilities are “sense of self worth, desire to be happy, desire to follow my heart, self awareness, courage.”
- I was naive and innocent enough to think it was actually possible.I had ZERO evidence of the fact that a job like the one I wanted was actually out there. But, being so innocent allowed me to believe in the possibility and the courage to be comfortable with the “Unknown.”And turns out it did exist. Six months after I graduated, my big bro, who followed me to Europe to travel, met a lawyer who worked for an international press and communications agency based in London and Spain. He connected me with her. I submitted my resume and the next thing I knew I was flying out for a two-week interview and landed the job.
You see, they looked for young, hungry people with a communications and sales background (which I had from working in advertising sales in college). For this company, HEART and HUNGER trumped experience. I eventually worked my way up and the rest is history…
There were A LOT of lessons along the way…
Stay tuned for more 🙂
